Our College Theme for 2020 is 'Shine your light for others'.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
‘Shine your light for others’ gives us a very clear direction: people do not light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. There is a clear recognition here that everyone has a light within them, whether or not it is dazzling, brilliant, crystal clear, subtle, subdued, mellow, refracted or reflected. There is no one way to be light, but the imperative is to be visible.
There is a recognition that light will shine and with added responsibility, that it must shine not for our personal benefit but in respect of the dignity of all others. As teachers, our task is not just to shine our light for students, but rather to illuminate the paths through which they will discover their own luminescence, for it is their light that drives the future.
We can take comfort from the fact that our students over the years have found ways to protect human dignity and the environment in which we live and will no doubt continue to do so.
