The College Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Maria Haggett as College Principal, commencing January 2021.
We are looking forward to introducing Maria to our community and welcoming her with true Benedictine hospitality.
Below is the formal announcement from Board Chair, Dr Paul Kremer.
Dear Members of the Mater Christi College community
On behalf of the Mater Christi College Board of Directors, I am delighted to announce that Ms Maria Haggett has been appointed as the next Principal of Mater Christi College, beginning in January 2021.
After a comprehensive search, led by Hutton Consulting Australia, the selection panel met with an impressive field of suitably qualified and experienced educational leaders. The Board unanimously agreed that Ms Haggett’s breadth of experience, knowledge and passion for engaging and empowering young people, together with her Catholic faith and commitment to the Benedictine charism, make her an ideal educational leader to steer Mater Christi College into its exciting next phase.
Ms Haggett has significant experience in educational leadership. Currently in her seventh year as Deputy Principal of St Bede’s College Mentone, Ms Haggett has worked in both Catholic Education and Diocesan roles. Prior to St Bede’s, Ms Haggett held the position of Deputy Principal at Catholic College Sale, Year 9 & 10 Programs Leader at Lavalla Catholic College and Youth and Sacramental Coordinator at St Mary’s Cathedral Parish, Sale. Additionally, Ms Haggett was a partner in a hospitality business in Sale, fulfilling a long-held desire to utilise her skills in commercial cookery and hospitality, alongside her interests in music, the creative arts and AFLW/M.
Ms Haggett is currently undertaking a Doctor of Education at the University of Melbourne and completing a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education at Australian Catholic University. Ms Haggett has completed post graduate studies in Instructional Leadership and Theology; she holds a Bachelor of Education (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts.
Ms Haggett’s style of collaborative leadership and passion for providing a future focused faith- based education for young women, was inspired during her time as a student at Our Lady of Sacred Heart College in Bentleigh. Her strong personal educational philosophy centres on the development and success of the staff and students within her care.
Ms Haggett is married to Steve Nash and together they are proud parents of two adult children, Lily and Sophie.
The Board’s role is to ensure a smooth transition for the incoming Principal and there is more than sufficient time for this process to occur. Together with Good Samaritan Education, we look forward with confidence to supporting Ms Haggett as she further develops the significant legacy that our current Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald has built over the last nineteen years. We look forward also to opportunities, both formal and informal, in the coming months to acknowledge and thank Mary Fitz-Gerald for 20 years of outstanding leadership.
Paul Kremer Chair of Board
