Goal setting is not a new initiative in schools, however, our recent work with students has shown that developing SMART learning goals is making a real difference for many girls.

The theory of goal-setting is well known. Goals help us to sort out what is important, create focus, assist motivation and inspire us to take responsibility. They are especially relevant for developing good learning practices.

At the start of this year, Pastoral Group teachers worked with students to create SMART goals related to learning for 2017.

SMART goals are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant, Rigorous, Realistic, and Results Focused
  • Timely and Trackable

SMART goals are a way of building capacity to tackle challenges. Learning how to frame goals and being willing to review and re-set goals are important skills that support effective learning and help us to become our best self.

We encourage students to share and discuss their SMART goals with their parents and teachers throughout the year. We will also encourage students to lead the conversation about their goals and their learning at the upcoming Progress Meetings.
