Last week, we held our VCAL Main Event.

We learn to work as a team in VCAL and to meet particular competencies. Our Main Event is an opportunity for us to organise a complex project.

In the past, VCAL students ran Main Events to raise funds for bigger organisations like White Ribbon and Make A Wish. This year we wanted to run a Main Event to raise awareness around animals. We looked at organisations like Guide Dogs Australia but decided to raise funds for a local Wildlife Shelter in Emerald because we learnt that the shelter may close due to high costs.

The Emerald Monbulk Wildlife shelter is run by a volunteer, Carol. She looks after animals until they find a new home or are well enough to go back into their habitat. Chloe Leipold and Sara Mugridge visited Carol at her shelter and saw how much time and effort she puts into her work.

For our Main Event we sold slices, fruit skewers, nachos, chips, pasties, coffee, smoothies and more. We also organised a free dress day with gold coin donations. And for entertainment, Animals From OZ brought a wombat, bat, possum and sugar glider to the College.

During Term 2, we have also been learning how to create a large mosaic piece of wildlife to put in the Main Courtyard.

We were very pleased with the success of the day and raised $1347.55 for the Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter.
