CLASS OF 2024 SPOTLIGHT - Georgia Langley

Georgia’s unique pathway to university has enabled her to combine playing the sport she loves with her desire to travel and experience new horizons while completing her nursing degree.

As a talented Hockey player, Georgia secured a place at Newberry College in South Carolina for 2025 on an Academic/Sports Scholarship, with support from Study & Play USA.

“While I knew I wanted to go to university and study in the medical field, I also wanted to experience something different and travel young. I am passionate about sport, so this was an opportunity to experience a few exchange years while advancing my skills and studies.”

Georgia says she arrived at Mater Christi in Year 10, not knowing anyone, and left at the end of VCE a more outgoing and self-assured person with the confidence to move to another country and live independently. She threw herself into Sports at the College, trying out for various teams, and was the Senior Sports Captain in 2024.

“I valued the education I was provided and used it as a resource to prepare me for College. But I also used my time to enjoy myself and try new things.”

Having two major focuses in Year 12 – her academics and her Hockey training – meant Georgia needed to be organised and prioritise when needed.

“It was about balancing my time and priorities throughout the year. Some weeks would be more academically focused with SACs and exams coming up; others would focus more on training and skills in the lead-up to big competitions. I also needed to stay calm and relaxed, so making time to socialise or take time for myself on the weekends was important too.”

Georgia is now making the most of her well-earned opportunity and enjoying College life at Newberry.

“It is certainly busy. There is always something new and interesting going on. The training is intense (around 15 hours a week), and my Science and Maths subjects for Nursing are pretty content-heavy, but it’s manageable and still less than my Year 12 load, which is a bonus.”

Georgia offers the following advice to future Year 12 students:

“Don’t be afraid to do something bold. Taking on a big goal at a young age might be scary, but it’s 100% worth trying.”
