Years 9 & 10

The Year 9 curriculum and learning experiences build on the foundations from Years 7 & 8  within the framework of the Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) and Content Descriptors in the Victorian Curriculum.

Year 9 Learning Program


Learning in Year 9 at Mater Christi College includes:

  • an explicit focus on core literacy and numeracy skills across all learning areas.
  • a range of elective choices to enable students to have greater agency over their preferred learning pathway.
  • emphasis on “soft skills” for future success, through interdisciplinary learning. Soft skills include: creative thinking, communication skills, adaptability and curiosity.
  • an Enrichment learning program that incorporates applied learning and vocational education opportunities.  
  • provision of programs to support and enhance student wellbeing through social and emotional learning.

Year 9 students engage in core and a range of elective studies in the following learning areas:

  • Arts
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Humanities
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE) (Chinese or French)
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education
  • Science
  • Technology

Year 10

In Year 10, girls become part of the Senior School and their subject choices expand significantly.
Students continue with a combination of core and elective studies which can include access to VCE and VET studies. Comprehensive support is provided for students and parents / carers to assist with subject selection and pathways planning.

Core Units

  • Religious Education (selecting from Religious Education and Youth Ministry)
  • English (selecting from Mainstream English or Foundation English)
  • Mathematics (selecting from Enhancement Maths, General Maths or Essential Maths)
  • Health and Physical Education

Electives

In addition to this, students select nine electives. This selection must include at least one elective from each of the following Domains.

  • ‍Arts and/or Technology
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Humanities
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE) (Chinese or French)

The remaining two choices can be from any Domain, excluding Religious Education and Mathematics. Students can also include an Accelerated VCE Study in their program.
