Years 9 & 10

Learning in Year 9 at Mater Christi College gives students opportunity to begin to exercise autonomy in their learning journey.

Year 9 Learning Program


The Year 9 Curriculum design includes:

  • an explicit focus on core literacy and numeracy skills across all learning areas.
  • a range of elective choices to enable students to have greater agency over their preferred learning pathway.
  • Curriculum design and enrichment programs that assist students to develop and extend their creative thinking, communication skills, adaptability, and curiosity.
  • Enrichment Week programs in Terms 2, 3 and 4 that include Social Justice activities, career focused testing and an adventure camp week.
  • provision of programs to support and enhance student wellbeing through social and emotional learning.

Year 9 students engage in core and a range of elective studies in the following learning areas:

  • Arts
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Humanities
  • Languages - Chinese or French
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education
  • Science
  • Technology

Year 10

In Year 10, girls become part of the Senior School and their subject choices expand significantly.
Students continue with a combination of core and elective studies which can include application based acceleration into VCE and VET studies. Comprehensive support is provided for students and parents / carers to assist with subject selection and pathways planning.

Core Units

  • Religious Education (selecting from Religious Education electives and Youth Ministry)
  • English (selecting from Mainstream English or Foundation English)
  • Mathematics (selecting from Enhancement Maths, General Maths or Essential Maths)
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Science

Electives

In addition to this, students select six electives. This selection must include at least one elective from two of the following learning areas:

  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Languages
  • Design and Technology

Students can also apply to include an Accelerated VCE Study in their program.
