ONE VCE at MATER - Charlie
Charlie’s first experience with disability support work came through the opportunity to volunteer with Interchange Outer East (IOE).
“When I started as a volunteer for IOE, I was invested right from the first activity; I knew this was something I’d like to do for a really long time.”
Charlie was later offered a position as a Junior Support Worker in September 2023, and she jumped at the opportunity straight away. Then, after completing a number of required training courses, including first aid, manual handling, medication administration, and meal assistance via a feeding tube, she was ready to go.
“I love disability support work because there is always something different happening; I don’t think I’ve ever had one shift that is the same as another. I also really enjoy creating a safe and happy environment for all of the participants.”
Charlie mostly works in the Recreational Program at Interchange, accompanying participants on daytime outings to parks, pools, the Zoo, and more. She also attends camps, where she supports people to do activities like rock climbing, giant swings, and ziplines.
"My favourite part about camp is seeing people do activities that they thought they wouldn’t be able to do and seeing the smiles on their faces when they achieve that goal. At IOE I also have the opportunity to support people one-on-one and learn all about them and the things they enjoy.”
Charlie has chosen a balanced mix of VCE and Vocational Major subjects for her Senior years. These include VCE English and Maths, VCE Psychology, VET Allied Health Assistance and VM Work-Related Skills and Personal Development. She says VET Allied Health is particularly useful for understanding the legal side of disability work, and Psychology helps her better understand how to support the emotional needs of the people she cares for. Charlie also says she enjoys her VM subjects because they offer a more hands-on approach, which suits her learning style.
Charlie’s subject choices are a fantastic example of the way the new One VCE can be tailored to suit individual learning and career goals.
