Welcoming Year 7 2025
On 3 December, we welcomed our 2025 Year 7s. Their Learning Leader, Ms Colyer and our College Captains, Ava and Annabella, made sure to wrap them up in kind words of encouragement.
Ms Colyer said:
"Together, you and I will walk down this new path. You may be one amongst twenty-eight in your class, but together, we are a united year level, walking forward as one vibrant community.
Yes, there will be bumps along the way - setbacks that cause you to stumble. But I promise you this: I will be right there beside you, alongside your homeroom teacher, lifting you up, dusting you off, and guiding you back onto that path." - Ms Colyer
This morning, I ask 5 things of each of you:
1. When you feel those butterflies of nervousness, remember to breathe; take a moment to inhale deeply and know that you are safe here.
2. If you catch someone's eye, let that be a moment of connection - share a smile, radiate confidence, and be the light in someone's day.
3. Embrace the stillness of this moment; you will never again experience this awe-inspiring first day of high school.
4. Be open, take that courageous step forward, and stretch your comfort zone; you might just forge a beautiful friendship with someone that starts with "Hi, my name is..."
5. And don't forget to read your letter! Each 2024 Year 7 student poured their thoughts and tips into a letter for you. Embrace it, and once you've read it, hand it to your homeroom mentor; it will be the cherished first entry in your year-long journal.
Ava and Annabella offered these words:
"We are so excited to see all of your beautiful faces in person on your first day of high school, and we are absolutely thrilled to welcome you all to Mater Christi College!
We remember being in your shoes, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as we walked into the campus for the first time. This is your new chapter. We are so excited to be here and help you begin. We know you are going to love Mater as much as we do. It truly is the best place to grow up, learn, and thrive.
Mater Christi is more than just a school—it’s a community where everyone belongs.
Over the coming months, you will have the chance to meet our incredible teachers, explore new subjects, and discover talents you didn’t even know you had. More importantly, you will make friendships that will last a lifetime.
We are here to help you find your place. Mater Christi has so many facets, and we are excited to help you explore them all.
During your time here, you’ll find your way to ‘be your own kind of girl’, something that is heavily employed here at Mater Christi. Being your own kind of girl means being true to yourself—following your own interests and hobbies, creating a path unique to you and only you. As you spend more time at Mater, you will be able to develop yourself and become your own kind of girl.
Our advice for you may be something that you have heard before, but we really mean it when we say:
* Be curious. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, whether about schoolwork, clubs, or even how to get to class. Everyone is here to help you; trust us, we have all been in your shoes.
* Get involved. Join clubs, try out for sports teams, and take advantage of the facilities, especially in your Junior years. These opportunities will help you feel more connected and make your high school experience unforgettable.
* Be bold. Put yourself out there. Truly, it makes the biggest difference. You will make new friends and learn so much about yourself. Everyone is here to learn and discover more of their hidden talents.
We wish you so much luck in your first few weeks and later in your years here at Mater Christi. We are always here if you ever need anything; please do not hesitate to find us in the yard or in the classroom, send us an email, or help us to help you. We cannot wait to see who you become, and please enjoy and take advantage of every opportunity.
Enjoy every moment of this journey, and remember, you are now part of the Mater Christi family. Welcome aboard—we cannot wait to see what amazing things you’ll achieve."
